This is really old work when I first began researching our family tree, but it might be helpful later.

Native American Ancestry

The only race
required to be proven?

Yet it is in our hearts and our heritage
and we know the truth.

Documentation, research, questions
may seem endless,
yet we know who we are.

Speak with your elders and learn more about
your family, then begin to build
your family tree.
When the Carter woman married the Cochran man, the union brought together
a very strong Native American background, which has likely never been recorded nor documented on any Indian Rolls.

She never knew about her father's heritage, so the search continues for
her grandchildren.

There are many surnames in this union being researched; it is always a work
in progress;  there are many theories, so take what you find and hold on to it
for future reference.

Someday our Elders will show us the true facts.

SUBJECT: ASHLEY VAUGHAN

Charlotte Co., Va. Marriage Record

20 Apr. 1807 VAUGHAN, Ashley to Jane GREGORY
Sur: Hezekiah McCargo.  Mar. 22 Apr. by Rev. David McCargo

Re: Ashley VAUGHAN.  Wife was dau. of Joseph Gregory, Sr.

Ashley Vaughan appeared on the following censuses:

1810 - Charlotte Co., VA
1820 - Mecklenburg Co., VA
1830 - Rutherford Co., TN
Next to his wife's bro., EDWARD GREGORY, near the
Davidson Co. line,           portion that was added to Davidson
before 1850
1840 - Davidson Co., TN
          Apparently near the Rutherford line.
Nearby names indicate his wife (widow?) was the JANE
VAUGHAN on the                1850 Mort. Sched., Davidson Co., TN
----------
Have not been able to identify any children of ASHLEY & JANE
(GREGORY) VAUGHAN, for Gregory genealogy (OR siblings of Ashley
Vaughan).

Wonder how Ashley Vaughan fit with other Vaughan's of the area in
VA.  His father could have been in Charlotte, Mecklenburg or
Lunenburg.
------------
Ashley Vaughan's name appears in a "Yates & Knight's Shop Book" -
1822.

Blacksmith business located on the S. Meherrin R. (div. line
bet. Mecklenburg & Lunenburg Counties, Va.,) where "Yatesville" &
"Mill Grove" were on the old maps.  VAUGHAN accts. were: Ashley;
Willis; and Pleasant.
